Series Match, Berlinale Series Market: Titles, Highlights and Trends

A high-powered first Series Match recently took place, uniting German, Latin American, and Spanish producers in an event organized by Iberseries & Platino Industria y Berlinale Series Market. The event featured a new series from renowned “City of God” director Fernando Meirelles and DP Cesar Charlone, as well as Angela Chaves, creator of the Netflix Spanish-language mega-hit “Desperate Lies,” and “Sissi” co-head writer Robert Krause.

The series showcased at the event displayed undeniable ambition and were created by companies with a track record of producing quality content. SKP, a Berlin-based production company known for adapting Spain’s “Poquita Fe” for the German market, is now expanding into premium genre-driven limited series with international appeal. One of their upcoming projects, “Monika,” is described as a premium international event series by Zeitsprung producer Gala Souvignier.

These series are not just about genre; they are also about substance and depth, exploring themes at an industry and thematic level. For example, “Assassins in Paradise” delves into the idea of escaping geography but not oneself, as producer Paula Taborda dos Guaranys explains.

Another project, “Scorched Earth” from Chile’s Villano, combines genre tension with emotional and historical depth, exploring how inherited myths shape identity and how the past continues to influence contemporary Europe and Latin America.

Some of the standout titles showcased at the event include “El Abuso,” a collaboration between Alterna Media, Federation Spain, and Ojo Films, which tells the true story of a dramatic jailbreak in Uruguay in 1971. “Assassins in Paradise” follows a married couple of German hitmen who find themselves torn between reinventing themselves in a tropical paradise and returning to their old ways.

“Monika – Victory and Death,” a collaboration between Zeitsprung Pictures, Mariawood Producciones, and Fine Time Filmproduktion, tells the fascinating true story of Monika Ertl, who embarked on a journey of vengeance and political intrigue.

Other projects like “The Runaway” and “Seven Women” also promise engaging storylines and compelling characters, showcasing the diverse range of content being developed by these talented producers.

Overall, the Series Match event was a platform for showcasing innovative and ambitious series from a variety of producers, highlighting the creativity and talent present in the German, Latin American, and Spanish television industries.
