Several senior FBI leaders ousted without explanation, sources say
Top FBI officials faced termination this week, as confirmed by sources familiar with the matter. Among those ousted were former acting FBI director Brian Driscoll, assistant director Steven Jensen, and agents Walter Giardina and Christopher Meyer. The reasons behind their terminations remain undisclosed.
The abrupt firings have sparked concerns among rank-and-file agents regarding potential political motivations behind the dismissals. Giardina and Meyer’s involvement in investigations related to former President Donald Trump has raised eyebrows within the bureau.
Driscoll, a seasoned FBI veteran with nearly two decades of service, had previously clashed with Trump’s defense attorney, Emil Bove, over compiling a list of agents involved in the investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Despite facing criticism for insubordination, Driscoll garnered support from agents and law enforcement groups.
Following the confirmation of Kash Patel as FBI director, Driscoll was reassigned to lead the FBI’s Critical Incident Response Team. In a farewell email to staff, Driscoll expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve alongside his colleagues.
Jensen’s dismissal came as a surprise to senior leadership at the U.S. attorney’s D.C. field office, where he was scheduled to appear at a press conference on a hate crimes indictment. D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro declined to comment on the reasons behind Jensen’s firing, emphasizing the focus on addressing crime and hate crimes.
Both the FBI and Justice Department officials have refrained from providing details on the terminations. The sudden ousting of these high-ranking officials has raised questions within the bureau and the law enforcement community.
The developments surrounding the removal of these top FBI officials underscore the challenges and complexities within the agency. As the FBI navigates through these transitions, the focus remains on upholding its mission and commitment to serving the American people.
