‘Severance’ Composer on ‘Dream’ Theme Tune Popularity: ‘It’s Crazy’

Composer Theodore Shapiro Reflects on the Popularity of His Music for “Severance”

American composer Theodore Shapiro, known for his work on Ben Stiller’s award-winning series “Severance,” recently opened up about the overwhelming popularity of his music for the show. In a roundtable discussion at the Film Fest Ghent’s World Soundtrack Awards, where he is nominated for Television Composer of the Year, Shapiro expressed his gratitude for the positive reception his work has received. He drew inspiration from legendary composer John Williams and shared his amazement at seeing his music featured on popular shows like “Saturday Night Live” and “The Tonight Show.”

When asked about the pressure of creating new music for Season 3 of “Severance,” Shapiro humorously remarked that he was thankful the main title theme would remain the same. However, he acknowledged feeling some pressure to continue evolving the music while staying true to the essence of the series. Collaborating with Stiller, Shapiro discussed how their conversations focused on specific elements of the story, rather than conceptualizing the music in a broad sense.

Joining Shapiro at the roundtable were other WSA nominees, including Martin Phipps, Camille, and Robin Carolan. Carolan, known for his work on “Nosferatu,” shared insights into his upcoming project with director Robert Eggers, highlighting Eggers’ meticulous attention to detail and authenticity on set. Carolan also touched on the challenges of using period-correct instruments for the score, particularly in films set in different historical eras.

As Shapiro continues to craft the musical landscape for “Severance,” fans can expect a blend of innovation and familiarity in the upcoming season. With a deep appreciation for the storytelling and characters of the series, Shapiro’s music will undoubtedly enhance the viewing experience for audiences around the world.
