Sheriff charged with third DUI after driving 110 mph with lights and sirens blaring

A Kentucky sheriff is facing his third DUI charge after being caught driving at 110 miles per hour with his lights and sirens on. Sheriff Terry Gray, 48, was arrested by Mason County Sheriff Ryan Swolsky after nearly colliding with him on the road. This marks Gray’s third DUI arrest in just two years, prompting Governor Andy Beshear to call for his resignation.

Gray was pulled over while wearing his uniform, with handcuffs and a gun in his possession. Sheriff Swolsky reported smelling alcohol on Gray’s breath, and subsequent tests revealed a blood-alcohol level of .226, nearly three times the legal limit. A bottle of Fireball whiskey was also found in Gray’s squad car.

The sheriff is facing charges of driving under the influence with aggravating circumstances, two counts of felony wanton endangerment, three counts of reckless driving, and four counts of official misconduct. This latest arrest comes after Gray was previously arrested for DUI in December 2023 and for overturning a tractor while intoxicated in August 2024.

Sheriff Swolsky, who arrested Gray, emphasized the need for him to resign, stating that his actions have tarnished the badge and are unacceptable in law enforcement. Both Governor Beshear and the general counsel have also called for Gray’s resignation, threatening removal for neglect of duty if he refuses.

Gray is set to be arraigned next Monday as the legal proceedings continue. The repeated DUI arrests and reckless behavior have sparked outrage and demands for accountability within the law enforcement community. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding the law and setting a positive example for others to follow.
