Showrunner Warren Leight Exits, Production Pauses

Changes are happening at CBS’ “CIA,” the newest spinoff of the popular show “FBI.” Showrunner Warren Leight, known for his work on “Law & Order: SVU,” has decided to step back from his role as showrunner. Leight took over the position in July from David Hudgins, but sources have revealed that Mike Weiss, the current showrunner of “FBI,” is in discussions to take over the role while also continuing to showrun and executive produce “FBI.”

Production on “CIA” will be briefly paused during the showrunner transition, but the premiere date is still set for mid-season and is not expected to be affected by the changes.

The one-hour crime drama stars Tom Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss, known for his work on “Chicago Med,” as two unlikely partners working together at the CIA’s New York Station. Ellis plays a fast-talking, rule-breaking CIA case officer, while Gehlfuss portrays a by-the-book FBI agent who believes in the rule of law. Together, they must collaborate to investigate cases and criminals threatening U.S. soil, using their differences as strengths.

Natalee Linez also stars in the series, with casting underway for a new chief of station following Michael Michele’s exit from the show. “CIA” and “FBI” are produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Wolf Entertainment.

Stay tuned for more updates on the show as the new showrunner takes over and production resumes on “CIA.”
