Simon Holmstrom on an Islanders tear after reunion with Jean-Gabriel Pageau

The recent surge in production by Simon Holmstrom of the New York Islanders cannot solely be attributed to playing alongside Jean-Gabriel Pageau. While the two have only been paired together for six of the last 14 games, their chemistry certainly hasn’t hurt, especially considering Holmstrom’s impressive five points in the past three games, including a standout performance in the Islanders’ win over the Wild.

Pageau, who also serves as Holmstrom’s penalty-killing partner, emphasized their close off-ice relationship and constant communication on the ice. He acknowledged that playing with Pageau has elevated his game, but Holmstrom’s recent success goes beyond their partnership.

In the past month, Holmstrom has recorded 13 points in 14 games and boasts an impressive 84.19 goals for percentage at 5-on-5, showcasing his all-around improvement. Pageau praised Holmstrom’s skating, confidence with the puck, shooting ability, defensive plays, and shot-blocking, noting his consistent contributions in every game.

Islanders’ coach Patrick Roy highlighted the noticeable growth in Holmstrom’s game, particularly in his puck possession, defensive positioning, and increased confidence in shooting. Roy commended Holmstrom for his assertiveness and consistency on the ice, pointing out his well-rounded skill set.

Looking ahead, Kyle MacLean is set to return to the lineup, replacing Max Tsyplakov on the fourth line alongside Casey Cizikas and Marc Gatcomb. Roy emphasized the team’s collective effort and the importance of involving every player in their success.

In goal, Ilya Sorokin will get the start against the Jets, as the Islanders continue to build on their recent strong performances. Holmstrom’s continued development and contributions, both on and off the ice, will be crucial for the team’s success as they push towards their goals for the season.
