Sinatra’s NJ hometown sees traffic fatalities vanish thanks to political will, smart design
The birthplace of Frank Sinatra, Hoboken, New Jersey, is celebrating a remarkable achievement – nine consecutive years without a single car-crash death. The last fatality occurred on January 17, 2017, marking a significant milestone in traffic safety for the city of 60,000 residents.
This impressive feat can be attributed to the city’s commitment to smart design, strong political leadership, and community engagement. By implementing strategic changes to the infrastructure, Hoboken has been able to create streets that prioritize safety and accessibility for pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists alike.
Former Mayor Ravi Bhalla played a crucial role in spearheading this initiative, recognizing the need for safer streets as a young father navigating the city with his child. His analysis of crash data revealed that pedestrians and cyclists were disproportionately affected by traffic accidents, leading to a focus on improving visibility and reducing risks at crosswalks.
In 2019, Bhalla launched the “Vision Zero” Task Force, which led to the redesign of roads with a focus on protecting vulnerable road users. Measures such as extending sidewalks into intersections, providing a head start for pedestrians at crosswalk signals, lowering speed limits to 20 mph, and enhancing visibility with brighter paint have all contributed to a safer urban environment.
Moreover, Hoboken took innovative approaches to enforcement, replacing traditional parking tickets with physical barriers to prevent illegal parking near intersections. Former parking spaces were repurposed into rain gardens, bike parking, or widened sidewalks, further enhancing the city’s pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
Community engagement was a key component of Hoboken’s traffic safety transformation, with residents actively participating in surveys, meetings, and test runs of proposed changes. By soliciting feedback and monitoring near-miss incidents, city leaders were able to proactively address potential dangers before they resulted in serious injuries.
As newly appointed Mayor Emily B. Jabbour takes office, she has pledged to uphold the high standards of safety that have been established in Hoboken. By continuing to prioritize traffic safety and sustainable urban design, the city aims to serve as a model for other communities seeking to create safer streets for all.
