Sister Jean, Loyola Chicago icon and basketball chaplain, dead at 106
Sister Jean, Loyola Chicago Men’s Basketball Chaplain, Passes Away at 106
It is with heavy hearts that Loyola Chicago announced the passing of Jean Dolores Schmidt, affectionately known as “Sister Jean,” on Thursday. At the age of 106, Sister Jean left behind a legacy that will forever be remembered.
During Loyola Chicago’s incredible Final Four journey in 2018 as an No. 11 seed, Sister Jean became a national sports icon. She had been the official chaplain of the Ramblers since 1991 and played an integral role in the team’s success.
“In many roles at Loyola over the course of more than 60 years, Sister Jean was an invaluable source of wisdom and grace for generations of students, faculty, and staff,” said Loyola President Mark C. Reed. “Her presence was a profound blessing for our entire community, and her spirit will live on in the lives she touched.”
Despite retiring from her official duties with the men’s basketball team due to health concerns, Sister Jean’s passion for the game never wavered. In her memoir, “Wake Up with Purpose!: What I’ve Learned in My First Hundred Years,” she expressed her love for basketball and likened it to a game of chess.
Reflecting on the 2018 Final Four run, Sister Jean told the Chicago Sun-Times in 2024 that she relived those moments with joy. Her inspirational pregame prayers and unwavering support for the team endeared her to fans and players alike.
One of Sister Jean’s memorable moments was her pregame prayer before a 2021 NCAA tournament game against Illinois, where she asked for divine assistance in securing a victory. Her strategic insights and unwavering faith made her an indispensable part of the team.
Loyola Chicago will soon announce visitation and funeral arrangements to honor the life and legacy of Sister Jean. Her impact on the university, the basketball program, and the community will never be forgotten.
In today’s fast-paced world, it can be easy to overlook the importance of taking time for ourselves. With work, family obligations, and social commitments constantly vying for our attention, self-care often falls to the wayside. However, making self-care a priority is essential for maintaining our physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Self-care is a broad term that encompasses a range of activities and practices that promote self-love, relaxation, and overall health. It can include anything from taking a long bath, going for a walk in nature, practicing mindfulness meditation, or simply allowing yourself to rest and recharge. The key is to engage in activities that bring you joy, calm your mind, and help you feel rejuvenated.
One of the most important aspects of self-care is setting boundaries and learning to say no. It can be easy to get caught up in trying to please others or taking on more than we can handle, but this often leads to burnout and resentment. By learning to prioritize our own needs and saying no when necessary, we can create space for self-care and ensure that we are giving ourselves the attention and care we deserve.
Another essential aspect of self-care is taking care of our physical health. This can include eating nourishing foods, getting regular exercise, and getting enough sleep. When we prioritize our physical health, we not only feel better physically, but we also boost our mood and energy levels, making it easier to handle the stresses of daily life.
Mental and emotional self-care are equally important. This can involve practices such as journaling, therapy, or engaging in hobbies that bring us joy. Taking time to process our emotions, reflect on our thoughts, and engage in activities that make us happy can help us feel more balanced and grounded.
In today’s world, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed. However, by making self-care a priority, we can take control of our well-being and create a sense of balance and peace in our lives. Whether it’s setting boundaries, taking care of our physical health, or nurturing our mental and emotional well-being, self-care is essential for maintaining a healthy and happy life. So, take some time for yourself today and prioritize self-care – you deserve it.
