SoCal winery faces backlash over camel rides
Orfila Vineyards and Winery in Escondido, Southern California, has recently come under fire from animal rights activists for offering camel rides as part of their weekend activities. The winery, known for its beautiful views and excellent red wines, introduced the camel rides as a unique experience for guests. However, this decision has sparked outrage among animal lovers who believe that the camels are being exploited for entertainment.
Critics took to social media to express their disapproval of Orfila’s use of animals for entertainment purposes. Some called for the winery to stop using animals in their events, while others expressed their disappointment and threatened to cancel their memberships. The backlash intensified when local activists witnessed the camels being led around the vineyard’s grounds last Sunday.
Proponents of the boycott claim that the camels are being mistreated and forced to participate in activities that are not natural to them. They argue that using animals for entertainment purposes is unethical and can lead to injuries and exhaustion for the animals. Debbie Metzler, managing director of Captive Wildlife for the PETA Foundation, warned against the dangers of forcing wild and exotic animals to participate in such activities.
Despite the criticism, some supporters of Orfila defended the winery, praising their efforts to create unique and fun events for the community. They emphasized that Orfila has always been about bringing people together and providing enjoyable experiences for guests. However, the controversy surrounding the camel rides has divided opinions and sparked a heated debate on social media.
The camels involved in the rides are reportedly from Giddy Up Ranch, a business located in Phelan, about 116 miles north of the vineyard. Giddy Up Ranch specializes in providing camel rides, pony rides, and petting zoos for events and gatherings. The long distance between the ranch and the winery has raised concerns about the welfare of the animals and whether they are being overworked.
This is not the first time Orfila Vineyards has faced backlash for its use of animals in events. Last year, the winery received criticism for hosting a live giraffe on the property for a similar event. The giraffe attraction, known as “Groovin’ with a Giraffe,” resulted in a federal complaint from PETA and led to membership cancellations from the Orfila Wine Lovers club.
Founded in 1994 by Alejandro Orfila, a former Argentine ambassador, Orfila Vineyards has a rich history and strong ties to international relations. The winery has been known for its high-quality wines and scenic views, but the recent controversies surrounding the use of animals in events have tarnished its reputation.
Orfila Vineyard and Giddy Up Ranch have not responded to requests for comment on the controversy. The debate over the ethical treatment of animals in entertainment continues to rage on, with activists and supporters alike voicing their opinions on the matter.
