Spanish Creatives  Diego San José, Elena Trapé on Mediapro’s ‘Jakarta’

The Mediapro Studio Distribution, a Madrid-based production company, is set to showcase their latest scripted series “Jakarta” at Mipcom. This show, which is also in the lineup for Barcelona’s Serielizados Spanish competition, is creating quite a buzz as it reunites some of Spain’s top talents.

“Jakarta” is a six-part half-hour series created by Diego San José, the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed series “Celeste.” Joining him is concept director Elena Trapé, known for her work on the thriller “Rapa” and the award-winning film “Distances.” The duo is joined by Javier Cámara, a popular Spanish actor who not only helmed an episode but also took on the lead role.

In the series, Cámara plays Joserra, a former Olympian badminton player turned physical education teacher in a small Spanish town. His life takes a new turn when he meets a young badminton prodigy named Mar, portrayed by Carla Quílez. The show also features co-writers Daniel Castro and Fernando Delgado, who bring their expertise to the project.

“Jakarta” is set in the world of regional badminton tournaments, highlighting themes of existential defeat and the complexities of life. San José, who is known for his work in comedy, takes a bold step into pure drama with this series, delving into emotions and human connections.

The show’s executive producer, Alejandro Flórez, praises San José’s transition into drama and the performances of the cast, particularly Cámara and Quílez. The series delves into the characters’ inner struggles and traumas, set against the backdrop of a grey and melancholic Spain.

Trapé, who worked closely with San José on the series, drew inspiration from various sources to create a sense of discomfort and tension in the show. The challenges faced during the shoot included recreating different parts of Spain and building a unique universe for each episode.

As “Jakarta” prepares to be presented to global buyers at Mipcom, the team behind the series emphasizes its universal appeal. The story of two lost souls finding solace in an unexpected place resonates with audiences worldwide, making it a compelling and relatable narrative.

Produced by 100 Balas with Buendía Estudios Canarias, in co-production with Movistar Plus +, “Jakarta” is set to premiere in Spain on November 6th. With its engaging storyline, talented cast, and universal themes, the series promises to captivate audiences both locally and internationally.
