Spanish family killed in Hudson River helicopter crash laid to rest

The funeral for the Spanish family of five who tragically died in the Hudson River helicopter crash in New York earlier this month was held in Barcelona. The somber service took place at Sant Vicenç de Sarrià and concluded with a poignant rendition of “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra.
Agustín Escobar and Mercè Camprubí Montal, along with their three young children Agustín, Mercè, and Víctor, lost their lives when the helicopter they were in broke apart midair and crashed into the river on April 10. The family had been in New York City to celebrate their middle child’s ninth birthday when the tragedy occurred. A heartbreaking photo taken before their deaths shows the family smiling and full of excitement.
During the nearly two-hour service, Montal’s father, Joan Camprubí, expressed the pain the family had been feeling since the accident. He reflected on the memories of his loved ones and spoke about the importance of keeping their ability to smile alive.
The funeral service was attended by hundreds of mourners, including Catalonia’s regional leader, Barcelona’s Mayor, and the president of FC Barcelona. Family and friends shared touching memories of the Escobar and Camprubí Montal family, who were well-loved and respected in their community. Montal worked for Siemens Energy, while Escobar was the global CEO of rail infrastructure at Siemens Mobility.
Joan Camprubí thanked everyone for their support and mentioned the recent passing of Pope Francis, highlighting the late pontiff’s belief in the significance of a smile and sense of humor. The service concluded with a slideshow of the family at various holiday celebrations and vacations, accompanied by the iconic Sinatra tune.
The cause of the helicopter crash, which also claimed the life of the pilot, Navy veteran Sean Johnson, is still under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to release a preliminary report within the next 30 days. The tragic loss of the Escobar and Camprubí Montal family has deeply impacted their community and loved ones, who will always cherish the memories of their vibrant spirits.
