‘Spinners,’ Canal+’s South African Sports Drama, Returns for Season 2

Exciting News: “Spinners” Returns for Season 2 with Original Creators and Cast

Great news for fans of the South African extreme sports action drama “Spinners” – the show is coming back for a second season! The hit drama, set in Cape Town, will once again feature the original creators, writers, and cast members.

Co-produced by African streaming service Showmax and Canal+, season 2 of “Spinners” was shot on location in South Africa with showrunner and co-creator Benjamin Hoffman leading the way. Renowned director Jaco Bouwer, known for his work on the SXSW prizewinning eco-horror movie “Gaia,” is back in the director’s chair. Matthew Jankes and Sean Steinberg, who penned season 2, are also returning to bring their creative vision to life.

Joachim Landau is back as the producer of this gritty crime drama for Federation Middle East Africa & Caribbean, with Ramadan Suleman co-producing through his South African full-service company Natives at Large.

Studiocanal, the company behind Canal+ which commissioned the series, is gearing up to showcase a first look at season 2 at Mipcom. The show highlights the creative collaboration between the French TV group and Showtime, the streaming service of MultiChoice, a pan-African pay-TV operator.

The first season of “Spinners” made history as the first African show to participate in Canneseries’ main competition in 2023. It went on to win awards at Dakar Series, the Shanghai TV festival, and received three nominations at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA).

In season 1, viewers followed 17-year-old Ethan (played by Cantona James) as he sought to escape the cycle of gang violence through spinning, an extreme motorsport featuring daredevil stunts. Season 2 picks up two years later, with Ethan and his friends now spinning stars in the big city. However, their newfound peace is shattered when Ethan’s old gang orchestrates a brutal ambush. Desperate for help, Ethan turns to the Maseko clan, but their protection comes at a heavy cost.

The original cast members, including Cantona James and Chelsea Thomas, will reprise their roles in season 2. Brendon Daniels and local star Dillon Windvogel will also join the cast, along with cameo appearances from top female spinner Kayla Olifant.

New faces joining the cast for season 2 include Clementine Mosimane, Mondli Makhoba, Luyanda Zwane, and Aphiwe Mkefe.

The production of “Spinners” season 2 reflects Canal+’s commitment to ramping up its pipeline of Canal+ original series in Africa, with a goal of producing eight shows per year from various African countries.

Since 2018, Canal+ has produced 35 Canal+ series with African talent from 11 different African countries, showcasing a diverse range of stories and voices. Some of the notable series include “Invisibles,” “Agent,” “Cacao,” “Miami Wata,” “Eki,” “Or Blanc,” “Niabla,” “Ewusu,” and “Lakantane.”
