Spinners end Pakistan’s eight-year T20 drought against under-strength Australia

Pakistan made history by beating Australia in a Twenty20 match for the first time in eight years. The thrilling encounter saw Pakistan emerge victorious by 22 runs in the opening match of the three-game series.

The spin quartet of Saim Ayub, Abrar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, and Mohammad Nawaz showcased their skills by taking six wickets collectively to restrict Australia to 146-8 in response to Pakistan’s total of 168-8. Ahmed was the standout performer with figures of 2-10 off four overs, while Ayub’s two crucial wickets included the dismissal of Australia’s stand-in captain Travis Head.

Pakistan’s captain, Salman Ali Agha, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting the strength of their spin bowling attack. The absence of five World Cup players forced Australia to field a relatively inexperienced side, with debutants Matt Renshaw, Jack Edwards, and Mahli Beardman taking the field.

Despite a promising start, Australia faltered as Renshaw’s run-out and Cooper Connolly’s dismissal derailed their innings. Cameron Green top-scored with 36 runs, and Xavier Bartlett’s unbeaten 34 provided some resistance, but it was not enough to secure a victory for the visitors.

In the first innings, Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa put the brakes on Pakistan’s aggressive start after Ayub and Agha’s partnership. Zampa’s four-wicket haul included the crucial dismissals of both set batsmen. Babar Azam struggled to find his rhythm, managing only 20 runs in his 100th T20 match.

The series will continue with two more matches in Lahore, giving both teams a chance to bounce back and showcase their skills. The upcoming games promise more excitement and intense competition as Pakistan looks to maintain their winning momentum, while Australia aims to bounce back and level the series.
