Spirit Airlines to end service in 12 cities as rivals swoop in
Spirit Airlines has made the difficult decision to end flight service in a dozen cities, less than a week after announcing its second bankruptcy filing this year. The Florida-based company confirmed that it would be exiting markets such as Albuquerque, Birmingham, Boise, Chattanooga, Oakland, Columbia, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, and San Jose. Additionally, plans to launch service in Macon, Georgia have been canceled.
As Spirit serves numerous cities across North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean, this decision is a significant blow to the airline’s operations. Passengers with affected reservations will be contacted and provided with options, including refunds, according to a statement from a Spirit spokesperson.
This move comes amidst financial turmoil for the budget carrier, which first filed for bankruptcy protection in November 2024. After emerging from Chapter 11 reorganization, Spirit filed for bankruptcy again in August. The airline aims to cut costs by eliminating unprofitable routes, citing weak demand for domestic leisure travel and challenging market conditions.
In response to Spirit’s exit from certain markets, rival airlines have swiftly announced new flight offerings to capitalize on the vacuum left by the airline’s departure. United Airlines, for example, plans to add flights to 15 cities starting January 6, including popular destinations like Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Las Vegas.
United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, Patrick Quayle, emphasized the importance of providing alternative options for Spirit customers in case of a sudden closure. In a statement, a spokesperson for Spirit acknowledged the competition but reiterated the airline’s commitment to offering low fares and running a successful operation for years to come.
Meanwhile, Frontier Airlines has also seized the opportunity by introducing 20 new routes from cities like Detroit, Houston, Baltimore, Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, and Dallas. With flight prices ranging from $29 to $89, Frontier aims to attract budget-conscious travelers looking for affordable options.
As the airline industry continues to adapt to changing market dynamics, passengers can expect to see a shift in flight offerings and destinations as carriers vie for market share. The impact of Spirit’s exit from certain cities will undoubtedly be felt by both passengers and the industry at large, but the resilience and adaptability of airlines will play a crucial role in navigating these challenges.
