‘Squid Game’ Mobile Game Studio by Netflix

Netflix has made the decision to close down Boss Fight Entertainment, the studio responsible for creating the popular mobile game based on the “Squid Game” franchise. The closure of Boss Fight comes as Netflix reevaluates its gaming strategy under the leadership of president Alain Tascan, who joined the company in July 2024. The focus of Netflix’s games division has shifted towards party games, narrative games, kids games, and mainstream games, with an emphasis on games played directly on TVs rather than just mobile titles.

This shift in strategy began when Netflix closed its AAA video game studio, Team Blue, last October before any projects were released. The closure of Boss Fight, which was acquired by Netflix in 2022, comes as a surprise considering the success of “Squid Game: Unleashed” upon its release in December. Netflix has always stressed the importance of developing content around its owned intellectual property, making the closure of Boss Fight even more unexpected.

Boss Fight co-founder and CEO David Rippy expressed his gratitude for the time spent at Netflix in a statement posted on LinkedIn. He acknowledged the closure of the studio as “rough news” but highlighted the achievements of the team, including the success of “Squid Game: Unleashed” which topped the charts in 26 countries. Rippy mentioned that the team members are exceptional professionals and encouraged others to consider them for any open roles.

As for the future, Rippy mentioned that he, along with his colleagues Bill and Scott, will take a brief break before embarking on their next venture. Despite the closure of Boss Fight, Rippy expressed interest in hearing about any exciting opportunities, both work-related and personal.

Netflix declined to provide any further comments on the closure of Boss Fight Entertainment. The two games developed by the studio, including the “Netflix Stories” series and “Squid Game: Unleashed,” will still be available on the platform for users to enjoy. The streaming giant continues to evolve its gaming division with a renewed focus on different genres and platforms to cater to a diverse audience.
