Stamp Prices Increasing for the First Time in 2025
USPS Increases Price of Forever Stamps to 78 Cents
The U.S. Postal Service is set to raise the price of Forever stamps to 78 cents starting this weekend. The Postal Regulatory Commission has approved a 5-cent increase for various mail services, including postcards, metered letters, and Forever stamps.
Forever stamps, which can be used indefinitely for mailing letters weighing less than 1 ounce, will now cost 78 cents. Additionally, postcard rates will increase from 56 cents to 61 cents, and metered letters will go up from 69 cents to 74 cents.
Along with these changes, the USPS is also raising rates for shipping services. According to a recent news release, Priority Mail service will see a 6.3% increase, USPS Ground Advantage will go up by 7.1%, and Parcel Select rates will rise by 7.6%. All of these adjustments will come into effect starting Sunday.
Background and Reasons for Price Increase
After maintaining stamp prices at 73 cents earlier this year, the USPS has decided to implement the price hike to address financial challenges. The agency’s decision to hold off on raising prices in January was influenced by lower inflation projections at the time.
However, with new leadership in the Trump administration, there is a shift towards raising prices to tackle deficits. The USPS reported a $9.5 billion loss in 2024, prompting discussions among officials on pricing strategies.
While there were talks of implementing price increases outside the usual schedule, these plans were not executed. Critics argued against raising prices just before the scheduled July hikes. In addition to price adjustments, the USPS is also making changes to delivery time commitments to improve operational efficiency and cost savings.
Efforts Towards Financial Health
Acting Postmaster General Doug Tulino highlighted the USPS’s modernization efforts in an April keynote address, emphasizing the agency’s progress towards financial stability. He stated, “This transformation is about building a Postal Service that is more efficient, more capable, and more competitive for the future.”
Conclusion
As the USPS prepares to implement price increases for various mail services, including Forever stamps, customers will need to adjust to the new rates. These changes reflect the agency’s ongoing efforts to address financial challenges and improve its operational efficiency.
