Starlink in the crosshairs: How Russia could attack Elon Musk’s conquering of space

Recent reports from two NATO-nation intelligence services suggest that Russia is in the process of developing a new anti-satellite weapon. This weapon is specifically designed to target Elon Musk’s Starlink constellation by creating orbiting clouds of shrapnel. The ultimate goal is to challenge Western space dominance, which has been a significant factor in Ukraine’s military operations.

According to intelligence findings reviewed by The Associated Press, this weapon, known as the “zone-effect” weapon, aims to saturate the Starlink orbits with high-density pellets, potentially disabling multiple satellites simultaneously. However, such an attack could also result in significant collateral damage to other satellite systems in orbit.

While some analysts are skeptical about the feasibility of such a weapon due to the potential chaos it could cause in space, others, like Brig. Gen. Christopher Horner of the Canadian military’s Space Division, acknowledge that Russia’s pursuit of advanced space-based weapons is not implausible.

The Kremlin has not responded to requests for comments on these reports. However, Russia has previously advocated for international efforts to prevent the deployment of space weapons. President Vladimir Putin has also stated that Russia has no intentions of using nuclear weapons in space.

The development of such a weapon raises concerns about the potential impact on global satellite systems and the risks associated with space militarization. The findings suggest that the pellets used in the attack could be difficult to detect, complicating attribution in the event of an attack.

As the international community grapples with the implications of these reports, experts emphasize the need for transparency and cooperation to address emerging threats in space.
