State sues Roblox over alleged failed protection
Louisiana has taken legal action against the online gaming platform Roblox, accusing the site of creating an environment where sexual predators can easily target and victimize children. Attorney General Liz Murrill filed a lawsuit alleging that Roblox has failed to implement effective safety measures to protect young users from adult predators.
According to Murrill, Roblox’s lack of safety protocols puts children in Louisiana at risk. The platform has been criticized for prioritizing user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety, resulting in harmful content and predatory behavior.
The lawsuit comes in the wake of a recent case in Iowa where a 13-year-old girl was allegedly introduced to an adult predator on Roblox, leading to her kidnapping, trafficking, and rape across multiple states. Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard also reported multiple cases involving Roblox in Louisiana, including one where a man used voice-altering technology to pose as a girl on the platform.
Murrill believes that Roblox should be shut down to protect children from further harm. The company has faced backlash and legal challenges for not doing enough to safeguard kids on its gaming services. Despite Roblox’s claims of having a zero-tolerance policy for the exploitation of minors, critics argue that the platform lacks adequate age verification processes.
Roblox has introduced new measures to enhance safety, such as an artificial intelligence system to detect signs of potential child endangerment, including sexually exploitative language. The platform has also launched features like “trusted connections” for teenagers aged 13 to 17, requiring them to verify their ages with a video selfie to chat freely with known individuals.
While Roblox attempts to address safety concerns, the lawsuit highlights ongoing challenges in protecting young users from online predators. The platform’s popularity, with over 111 million monthly users, underscores the need for robust safety measures to prevent exploitation and abuse in virtual environments.
