Student suspect dies after high school shooting
The tragic incident at Evergreen High School in Colorado has left the community in shock and mourning. A student, whose identity has not been disclosed, opened fire at the school, injuring two classmates before taking his own life. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death of the suspected shooter, who succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The shooting occurred around 12:24 p.m., leading to three students being rushed to the hospital in critical condition. One student remains in critical condition, while another is stable as of Wednesday evening. A fourth student was also taken to the hospital with an undisclosed injury.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed his devastation over the senseless act of violence, offering his condolences to the victims and their families. The school was placed on lockdown after the incident, with authorities conducting a thorough sweep of the campus.
Sheriff’s office spokesperson Jacki Kelley described the situation as terrifying, emphasizing the need for swift and comprehensive action. Details about the suspected shooter, including age and gender, have not been released. Authorities are in the process of obtaining a warrant to search the student’s home and locker.
The suspect was armed with a revolver handgun during the attack, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement agencies. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, as well as the FBI, provided support to local authorities in ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
Following the shooting, a large contingent of police officers meticulously searched every room on campus. Parents were directed to Bergen Meadow Elementary to reunite with their children amidst the chaos and uncertainty.
