Sunny the eaglet has officially left the nest

An eaglet named Sunny has taken her first flight on June 2 at 10:46 a.m. PDT, leaving the nest she shared with her sister Gizmo and parents Jackie and Shadow since hatching in March. Sunny’s younger sister, Gizmo, is expected to follow suit soon. Young eagles typically fledge when they can flatten their wings and have flight-capable feathers, usually around 10 to 14 weeks of age.

In the weeks leading up to their first flight, Sunny and Gizmo demonstrated their ability to feed themselves and spent their first night alone on the nest on May 8. They also practiced flapping their wings vigorously to build up strength for flight. Sunny even started hopping onto the edges of the nest, preparing for takeoff.

According to Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), the organization monitoring the eagles via webcam, Sunny and Gizmo are likely both females. The organization shared that the eaglets are gaining strength and confidence daily, exploring their surroundings with innocence, playfulness, and occasional displays of fierceness.

Viewers from around the world have been following the eaglets’ journey via 24-hour livecam. This journey has been emotionally turbulent, as three eggs failed to hatch in 2024, but three appeared in the nest earlier this year. Unfortunately, one of the chicks did not survive a snowstorm in March. The surviving chicks, named Sunny and Gizmo, were chosen by local elementary school students in early April.

At their current stage, Sunny and Gizmo are estimated to be about 3 feet tall, closer to their father Shadow’s height. The sisters will not be tagged for tracking, making it challenging to monitor their post-fledging journey. They will spend the next few months near Big Bear Lake, learning to fish and hunt with their parents’ guidance. The US Fish & Wildlife Service reports that 70 percent of fledged eaglets survive their first year, with threats including disease, food availability, weather, and human interference.
