‘Superman’ Box Office, Emmys, Rihanna Watch: Daily Variety Podcast

Warner Bros. Discovery celebrated the successful debut weekend of “Superman” at the box office, with David Zaslav already taking a victory lap over the Man of Steel’s performance. Meanwhile, Rihanna made a stylish entrance to the premiere of “Smurfs” on Sunday, accompanied by her two young sons.

These exciting stories are highlighted in today’s episode of “Daily Variety,” a new podcast featuring discussions with journalists from Variety about the latest news, trends, and key personalities in the media and entertainment industry.

Rebecca Rubin, Variety’s expert on box office analysis, shared insights on “Superman’s” performance and highlighted some surprising regional trends in its success.

Rubin mentioned, “The top 10 markets for the film were typical, including cities like Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Chicago, and San Francisco. However, what stood out to me were the two theaters in Florida (Orlando and Miami) and one in Atlanta that made it into the top 10 locations. It was interesting to see these Southern venues among the highest-grossing. Overall, the film performed well across the country.”

Clayton Davis, Variety’s chief awards editor, offered some final thoughts on the upcoming Emmy nominations, particularly focusing on whether Noah Wyle from “The Pitt” would receive a nomination. Wyle, known for his previous nominations for NBC’s “ER,” is a dark horse contender for a drama series win after a long hiatus from Emmy recognition.

Marc Malkin, Variety’s red carpet expert, provided a lively recap of the “Smurfs” premiere event at Paramount Pictures lot in Hollywood. Despite arriving late, Rihanna charmed the crowd with her presence and shared her excitement about being a part of the beloved franchise as Smurfette.

Rihanna expressed, “I’ve always been a fan of Smurfs, and I’m thrilled for a new generation of fans to discover the film.”
