Suspected drunk driver Ivana Gomez brushed off fatal crash: cops

A tragic incident unfolded in Florida when a suspected drunk driver struck and killed a woman, later callously referring to the victim as “just a homeless person” to police. Ivana Gomez, 32, was driving her BMW at high speed through Miami in late May when she collided with 41-year-old Kathryn Kipnis with such force that Kipnis’s head broke through the windshield, with some of her hair becoming entangled.

Kipnis, who was not homeless as erroneously stated by Gomez, tragically lost her life after being dragged for over 230 feet before being violently thrown off the vehicle. A police officer who witnessed the harrowing crash had to reach speeds over 100 mph to catch up with Gomez as she attempted to flee the scene. Eventually, she was apprehended when she got stuck at a red light.

Upon inspection, police noted that Gomez exhibited signs of intoxication, including the smell of alcohol, red and watery eyes, and evidence of recent vomiting in her car. Despite struggling with a field sobriety test and requesting legal representation, Gomez callously remarked to police that she had only hit a homeless person and that it was merely an accident.

Following her arrest on charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide, bodycam footage captured Gomez in handcuffs, denying her earlier statement about the victim being homeless. Despite her denial in court, it was confirmed that Kipnis was a resident in the area and was returning home after a night out with friends.

During the court hearing, graphic images were presented showing the extensive damage to Gomez’s BMW, including a head-shaped hole in the windshield where Kipnis’s head had entered the vehicle. It was revealed that Gomez’s blood alcohol level was .112, exceeding the legal limit of .08, nearly five hours after the fatal crash.

Gomez currently remains in custody on a $251,000 bond, facing charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence and the importance of responsible behavior behind the wheel.
