Swimmer dies in NYC beach, another at Jersey Shore
Tragedy Strikes at New York City and Jersey Shore Beaches
On a fateful Monday, two separate incidents of water-related emergencies claimed the lives of swimmers in New York City and the Jersey Shore. In Brooklyn’s Manhattan Beach, a 55-year-old woman was pulled from the ocean by lifeguards after being found unconscious and unresponsive around 6:15 p.m. Despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital. The incident unfolded in front of shocked onlookers as first responders rushed to the scene, as captured in dramatic footage shared on the Citizen App.

On the same day, tragedy struck at the Jersey Shore in Seaside Heights, where a swimmer lost his life after getting caught in a rip current along with six others. Despite being off an unguarded beach and with rough waters keeping swimmers out of the ocean all day, the group found themselves in distress. The Seaside Heights rescue squad, responding to a call just after 7 p.m., arrived swiftly with a jet ski and rescue swimmers to assist the stranded individuals.

Tragically, one of the swimmers, an unidentified man, did not survive the ordeal and was pronounced dead after being taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River. The day had been designated a “red flag day” in Seaside Heights, signaling dangerous conditions that prompted lifeguards to restrict beachgoers from venturing into the ocean beyond knee-deep waters. With lifeguards off duty after 5 p.m., the response to the emergency came from the beach town’s rescue squad.
As investigations into both incidents continue, the communities mourn the loss of lives and reinforce the importance of water safety measures to prevent such heartbreaking outcomes in the future.
