Talles Magno has more optimism about second NYCFC stint

New York City FC put on a show at Yankee Stadium in their home opener, as they secured a convincing 5-0 victory over Orlando City SC. This marked the first time NYCFC had scored five goals in a match at Yankee Stadium since May 31, 2024, when Talles Magno was still with the team.

Magno, who was loaned to Corinthians in Brazil after a tumultuous period with NYCFC, made his return to the squad in this match. Coming on as a substitute in the 62nd minute, Magno almost found the back of the net with a clever touch past the Orlando goalkeeper, only for the play to be called offside. Despite this, it was a glimpse of the talent that Magno still possesses.

The Brazilian forward had been dealing with an injury during preseason, which limited his playing time in the first two matches of the 2026 season. However, he made a significant impact in this game, playing 29 minutes and showing signs of his potential.

NYCFC coach Pascal Jansen praised Magno’s performance, acknowledging that he is still working on his fitness to play a full 90 minutes. Magno himself expressed optimism about his return to the team under the new leadership of Jansen and sporting director Todd Dunivant.

Having initially joined NYCFC in 2021, Magno had a standout season in 2022, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists across all competitions. However, a positional change to striker in the following season led to a dip in form, prompting his loan move to Corinthians in 2024.

Despite the challenges he faced, Magno’s return to NYCFC has been met with positivity from the coaching staff. Both Jansen and Dunivant have praised his versatility and willingness to adapt to different roles within the team.

In the match against Orlando City, NYCFC’s attack was firing on all cylinders, with goals from Keaton Parks (2), Agustín Ojeda, Nicolás Fernández Mercau, and Maxi Moralez. The team dominated possession and outshot Orlando, showcasing their offensive prowess.

With this victory, NYCFC remains undefeated in the 2026 season and will look to build on this momentum in the upcoming matches. The team’s strong performance and Magno’s return provide a sense of optimism for what lies ahead in the season.
