Target says it’s working with ChatGPT for AI-assisted shopping

Target Partners with OpenAI to Revolutionize Shopping Experience

Target announced a groundbreaking collaboration with OpenAI on Wednesday, introducing a new way for customers to shop using ChatGPT. This innovative approach comes at a time when the retail giant is striving to retain customers amidst inflation concerns.

Through the ChatGPT app, customers will have the ability to explore Target’s product range and make purchases seamlessly. The feature is set to launch next week, catering to ChatGPT’s extensive user base of 800 million weekly active users, just in time for the holiday season.

Target is combatting its sales challenges by implementing price reductions and a $1 billion investment strategy to revitalize its brand. The retailer reported a 2.7% decline in same-store sales and a 19% decrease in profits in the latest quarter. With the growing trend of AI-driven shopping experiences, major retailers like Walmart have also partnered with OpenAI to enhance their sales strategies.

The ChatGPT-powered Target tool will operate as follows: Customers can engage with Target within the ChatGPT app, seeking recommendations for specific occasions like a family movie night. Target will then suggest relevant products such as blankets or snacks, enabling users to make purchases directly from the ChatGPT interface.

Target envisions that AI will evolve to understand and anticipate customer preferences, enhancing the shopping experience over time.

A recent Harris Poll revealed that nearly half of Gen Z consumers are open to using AI as a personal shopping assistant to assist them in making purchase decisions and finding discounts. Streamlining the shopping process through AI integration could significantly drive sales for retailers, as per industry experts.
