Tariffs could hike prices on Halloween products like costumes and candy, but experts say consumers aren’t scared

With Halloween just around the corner, many are getting ready to celebrate with costumes, decorations, and of course, lots of candy. However, this year, the specter of tariffs is looming over some of our favorite Halloween traditions, potentially driving up prices on everything from skeletons to pumpkins.

Despite the potential price increases, shoppers are still expected to spend big on Halloween. The National Retail Federation predicts that Halloween spending will reach a record $13.1 billion this year, surpassing the previous record of $12.2 billion. According to Katherine Cullen of the National Retail Federation, shoppers are being strategic with their spending, focusing on discount stores and prioritizing what’s important to them while being mindful of their budgets.

The impact of tariffs is being felt by businesses like Magic etc Ft Worth Costume Inc. in Texas. Owner Derek Kennedy relies on the Halloween season for a significant portion of his yearly sales, but this year, he’s facing challenges due to slower shipping times and higher wholesale prices caused by tariffs. Kennedy has had to absorb most of the cost of tariffs in order to keep prices low for his customers, but some items, like fog machines, have seen significant price increases that are difficult to offset.

It’s not just costumes and decorations that are being affected by tariffs. Candy prices are also on the rise, with average prices for fun-size and snack-sized chocolate bars increasing compared to last year. Even bulk candy purchases for trick-or-treaters are more expensive this year, with a 48-count box of full-size chocolate bars costing over $50, up from around $40 last year.

As Halloween approaches, it’s clear that tariffs are casting a shadow over the holiday season for both businesses and consumers. Despite the challenges, businesses like Magic etc Ft Worth Costume Inc. are finding ways to navigate the higher costs and continue to provide Halloween essentials to customers. And while prices may be higher this year, the spirit of Halloween remains strong as people prepare to celebrate in their own spooktacular ways.
