Tea dating app breach bigger than previously thought, company says

Tea, a popular women-only dating advice app, recently revealed that a hack on their platform was more extensive than initially reported. The company disclosed that users’ direct messages and some of their photos were compromised in the cyberattack. As a precautionary measure, Tea has taken the affected system offline to address the security breach.

The app, which has gained popularity as one of Apple’s most downloaded free apps, was targeted by hackers who accessed a data storage system containing personal information uploaded by members before February 2024. In addition to this, an unauthorized access also resulted in the exposure of 59,000 images and direct messages belonging to app users.

Tea provides a platform for women to share information about their dates and conduct background checks on potential matches. However, Ted Miracco, CEO of mobile security firm Approov, warned users to exercise caution when sharing personal information on widely used apps. He emphasized that the assumption of safety based on an app’s availability on major platforms like Apple or Google is a common misconception among consumers.

Miracco also criticized Tea for lacking adequate security measures, stating that the company should be held accountable for failing to protect their users’ data. He highlighted the importance of implementing basic cybersecurity protocols to safeguard sensitive information and prevent unauthorized access.
