Teen Daughter Of Chicago Man Who Was Detained By ICE Dies From Rare Cancer
Chicago Teen Who Advocated for Father’s Release from ICE Detention Passes Away After Battling Cancer
Ofelia Giselle Torres Hidalgo, a 16-year-old from Chicago, tragically lost her life to stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer. Despite her courageous fight against the aggressive disease, she succumbed to it on Friday. Her family announced that the funeral arrangements will be kept private.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, just three days before Ofelia’s passing, an immigration judge in Chicago granted conditional relief to her father, Ruben Torres Maldonado. The judge recognized the hardships that the deportation of Torres Maldonado, a father of U.S.-born children, would impose on his family. This ruling opens the path for Torres Maldonado to obtain lawful permanent residency and, eventually, U.S. citizenship.
Ofelia, who was actively involved in advocating for her father’s release, attended the hearing via Zoom shortly before her demise. Her attorney, Kalman Resnick, praised her courage and determination in the face of adversity, emphasizing her role as an inspiration to others.
Torres Maldonado, a skilled painter and home renovator, was detained by ICE during a crackdown operation in October. Ofelia, who was already undergoing cancer treatment at the time, made a heartfelt plea in a video posted on a fundraising page for her family, highlighting the unjust targeting of hardworking immigrant families.
Despite her deteriorating health, Ofelia continued to support her father, attending his legal hearings and advocating for his release. The family’s legal team successfully challenged Torres Maldonado’s detention, citing his lack of criminal history and due process violations.
The tragic loss of Ofelia serves as a poignant reminder of the human toll of immigration enforcement policies. As her family mourns her passing, they continue to navigate the complexities of their immigration case, striving to honor Ofelia’s legacy of resilience and advocacy.
