Tens of thousands stranded in the Middle East as Iran war complicates routes home
The escalating Iran war in the Middle East has left tens of thousands of people stranded, including Romanian religious pilgrims, tourists, and diplomats’ family members. Major airlines have canceled flights to and from the region, and airspace across the Gulf is closed. Some individuals have been forced to seek shelter amid airstrikes, while others are stuck on cruise ships unable to sail through the Strait of Hormuz.
In response to the escalating tensions, the U.S. State Department has urged all U.S. citizens in more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries to leave immediately due to safety concerns. Non-emergency personnel and families in six nations have been evacuated, with the United Arab Emirates being added to the list. Even traditionally safe countries like the UAE have been impacted by the conflict, with interceptions and attacks occurring.
In Israel, the U.S. ambassador has advised Americans to leave through Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, as options for evacuation are limited. Governments worldwide are working to repatriate their citizens, with Italy organizing flights from Dubai and France coordinating the return of thousands of French people.
German tourists, French citizens, and Romanian pilgrims have all been affected by the conflict, with efforts underway to get them safely back home. Romanians who were visiting Bethlehem on a pilgrimage were forced to cut their trip short and return to Romania as the war broke out. British travelers trapped in the UAE have also been successfully repatriated, with one individual recounting the tense moments at the airport as alerts warned of potential missile attacks.
Overall, the situation in the Middle East remains tumultuous, with individuals from various countries facing uncertainty and challenges as they navigate the ongoing conflict. Efforts to ensure the safe return of stranded individuals continue, with governments and authorities working to facilitate evacuations and repatriations.
