Texas inmate Charles Thompson’s final words revealed as he’s executed for killing his ex-girlfriend, her new boyfriend
The state of Texas carried out its first execution of the year on Wednesday evening, as Charles Victor Thompson, 55, was put to death by lethal injection. Thompson was convicted of the April 1998 murders of his ex-girlfriend, Glenda Dennise Hayslip, and her new boyfriend, Darren Keith Cain, in the Houston area.
Thompson was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m. local time at the Huntsville Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice after receiving the lethal injection. Before the procedure, he asked for forgiveness from the families of his victims, expressing his remorse for the heinous crimes he committed.
In his final words, Thompson acknowledged the pain he had caused and urged the families to find healing and solace. He also emphasized the importance of keeping faith in Jesus. As the injection took effect, Thompson gasped loudly before eventually ceasing to move, with his death confirmed about 22 minutes later.
Dennis Cain, the father of Darren Keith Cain, who witnessed the execution, expressed his belief that Thompson was now in hell. Harris County District Attorney Sean Tear, whose office prosecuted the case, stated that justice had finally been served after a long and arduous legal process.
The murders occurred when Thompson visited Hayslip’s apartment in the early hours of the morning and got into a dispute with Cain. Despite being initially asked to leave by the police, Thompson returned later and fatally shot both Hayslip and Cain.
Thompson’s initial death sentence was overturned, but he was resentenced to death following a new trial in 2005. He attempted to escape from the Harris County Jail shortly after his resentencing, leading to a three-day manhunt before he was apprehended in Louisiana while trying to flee to Canada.
The US Supreme Court rejected Thompson’s final appeal just an hour before the scheduled execution. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles also denied his request for clemency earlier in the week, sealing his fate.
The execution of Charles Victor Thompson marks a somber and long-awaited conclusion to a tragic chapter in the lives of the victims’ families and the community at large.
