The African Olympians” docuseries is set to follow African athletes in run-up to the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The Road to LA 28: The African Olympians is a groundbreaking docu-reality series that aims to shed light on Africa’s Olympic aspirations. The announcement of this exciting project was made at the International Salon for Audiovisual Content (SICA) in Ivory Coast, showcasing the continent’s journey towards the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Produced by Emmy-winning South African producer Dan Jawitz and former head of SuperSport, Gary Rathbone, the series will follow athletes from seven African nations as they prepare to qualify for the prestigious event. With twelve 24-minute episodes planned, viewers will get an intimate look at the emotional and physical challenges faced by Olympic medalists and rising stars in a variety of sports.

The series will cover a wide range of disciplines, from Africa’s well-established sports like long-distance running, boxing, swimming, and football, to emerging sports such as taekwondo, table tennis, volleyball, and rugby. Additionally, two one-hour specials are set to be released after the 2028 Games to capture the athletes’ Olympic experiences and their return home.

Athletes from Ivory Coast, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Kenya will be featured in the series, with the possibility of more nations making their mark on the podium. Rathbone highlighted Ivory Coast’s strong sporting tradition and past Olympic success as a key reason for launching the show at SICA in Abidjan.

Karl Boluwa, networking manager at SICA, expressed excitement about the project, stating that they are honored to host the series launch and facilitate discussions with key broadcasters and organizations. The producers are currently in talks with several broadcasters, including Canal+ International, SABC, RTI (Côte d’Ivoire), RTS (Senegal), KBC (Kenya), ZBC (Zimbabwe), and Max TV (Ghana), to ensure widespread distribution of the series across Africa.
