The New York Historical announces major expansion with Tang Wing
The New York Historical Museum is set to unveil its much-anticipated expansion, the Tang Wing for American Democracy, this summer in celebration of the US’s 250th birthday. The new wing will feature a variety of amenities, including a sprawling art gallery, a state-of-the-art conservation lab, a rooftop garden, massive classrooms, and the first-ever American LGBTQ+ Museum.
This revolutionary expansion has been in the works for decades, with various proposals and discussions finally coming to fruition with the help of a generous $125 million donation from archaeologist Agnes Hsu-Tang and her husband, Oscar Tang. The Tang Wing, located behind the original building, does not exceed the museum’s original height and cost roughly $360 million to complete.
Upon its opening, the Tang Wing will host a series of exhibitions dedicated to America’s 250th anniversary, showcasing key objects that highlight the evolution of democracy throughout history. The brand new Klingenstein Family Gallery will feature a “Democracy Matters” showcase, while a “Revolutionary Women” series will recognize the contributions of trailblazing females during the war effort.
One of the most exciting aspects of the expansion is the increase in student enrollment, with the museum now able to serve 30,000 students annually through its intensive classes. The Tang Wing aims to be a beacon for civic learning and a space for reflection on the values that continue to shape American democracy.
Dr. Louise Mirrer, President and CEO of The New York Historical Museum, expressed excitement about the opening of the Tang Wing, stating that it embodies the museum’s mission of illuminating the complexities of the American story and inspiring engagement with the ideas and principles that define it. The public can look forward to exploring the new wing when it opens its doors in June 2026.
