‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Artisans on Final Season, Bradley Cooper Episode

The critically acclaimed HBO series “The Righteous Gemstones” came to a dramatic close after four seasons of showcasing the outrageous antics of the dysfunctional Gemstone family as they navigated their megachurch empire in South Carolina. Led by patriarch Jesse (played by co-creator Danny McBride), along with his siblings Judy (Edi Patterson) and Kelvin (Adam Devine), the Gemstones spared no expense in their pursuit of fame and fortune, all under the guise of serving God.

Despite receiving only four Emmy nominations for its first three seasons, the final season of the show made a significant impact with six nominations in technical categories such as cinematography, music supervision, sound editing, stunt coordination, contemporary costumes, and period makeup. This recognition from the Television Academy indicates that the unique storytelling and bold choices made in Season 4 did not go unnoticed.

One standout episode from the final season is the Civil War-themed premiere, which delves into the story of the Gemstones’ ancestor Elijah, portrayed by Bradley Cooper. Nominated three times, this episode stands out as a departure from the usual narrative style of the series. Emmy-nominated cinematographer Paul Daley drew inspiration from classic Westerns and historical epics to create the authentic battlefield setting for Elijah’s story, using techniques like bleach bypass to enhance the visuals.

The production design and costuming played a crucial role in bringing the episode to life, with costume designer Christina Flannery and music supervisor DeVoe Yates earning nominations for their work. The chaotic telethon scene, featuring a high-energy musical number, required meticulous planning and choreography to capture the essence of the Gemstone family dynamic.

Flannery’s attention to detail in creating elaborate angel wings and unique outfits for the characters added to the over-the-top nature of the scene. The choice of marine attire for a pivotal moment involving the Gemstone siblings retrieving their father from a fishing boat in Florida was a deliberate nod to the uniforms worn by Scientologists in Sea Org.

Overall, the final season of “The Righteous Gemstones” showcased the series’ willingness to take risks and push boundaries, resulting in a well-deserved recognition from the Television Academy. The blend of humor, drama, and satire in the show’s storytelling resonated with audiences and critics alike, solidifying its place as a standout series in the television landscape.
