The Small Kingdom Setting A Big Example On HIV Prevention
Global Fund Executive Director Peter Sands recently visited Eswatini’s Central Medical Stores to inspect the first delivery of lenacapavir to reach the continent. This new HIV prevention injection, developed by Gilead Sciences, has the potential to revolutionize how people protect themselves from infection.
The warehouse staff at Eswatini’s Central Medical Stores were quietly bustling around the neatly stacked boxes of lenacapavir, conducting routine checks and entering data. Despite their calm demeanor, the significance of this delivery was not lost on them. After years of preparation by various partners including the Ministry of Health, the Global Fund, and Gilead, this moment marked a turning point in the country’s fight against HIV.
The LaMvelase Clinic in Manzini, operated by AHF Eswatini, is a beacon of hope for many seeking HIV testing, treatment, and prevention. The clinic offers compassionate care in a non-judgmental environment, where individuals can access a range of services including HIV tests, STI screenings, and family planning. The introduction of lenacapavir provides a discreet and liberating option for prevention, especially for those facing challenges with traditional prevention methods.
Dr. Nkululeko Dube, reflecting on the progress Eswatini has made in its HIV response, highlighted the importance of continued prevention efforts to ensure that the gains of the past decade are not reversed. The arrival of lenacapavir represents a significant step towards closing the remaining gaps in HIV prevention and treatment.
Eswatini is not alone in this milestone, as other countries in sub-Saharan Africa are also preparing to receive their first shipments of lenacapavir. The simultaneous introduction of this cutting-edge HIV prevention tool in low- and middle-income countries is a breakthrough in global health equity. However, the success of this initiative will depend on sustained investment and trust in healthcare systems and partners.
As the world embarks on this new chapter in HIV prevention, the hope is that this moment will be remembered as the catalyst for ending AIDS. By acting boldly and collaboratively, with communities at the center, we can work towards making the aspiration of ending AIDS a tangible reality.
