‘The Sopranos’ Characters Would Be Trump Supporters
“The Sopranos” Star Michael Imperioli Talks Characters’ Potential Support for Trump
Michael Imperioli, best known for his role as Christopher Moltisanti in the iconic HBO crime drama “The Sopranos,” recently shared his thoughts on how the characters in the show would align politically in today’s climate. In an interview with The Independent, Imperioli suggested that if “The Sopranos” were made today, the characters would “probably” be supporters of Donald Trump.
Imperioli emphasized that the show delves into the American dream, particularly through the perspective of immigrants. He noted that many of the characters on the show are immigrants themselves, with Italian roots, and that a significant portion of Italian immigrants were undocumented when they first arrived in the United States. This historical context, according to Imperioli, could lead some of the characters to lean towards supporting Trump, despite their immigrant backgrounds.
During its six-season run from 1999 to 2007, “The Sopranos” garnered critical acclaim and a loyal fan base. The show, created by David Chase, received numerous Emmy Awards, with three wins for lead actor James Gandolfini. Imperioli himself received Emmy nominations for his portrayal of Christopher Moltisanti, ultimately winning once for best supporting actor in a drama.
In a separate interview with the New York Times in 2019, David Chase shared his perspective on how Tony Soprano, played by Gandolfini, would view Trump. Chase believed that Tony Soprano would see Trump as insincere and lacking in credibility. He opined that Tony would likely dismiss Trump as “penny-ante” in terms of his dishonesty and public persona.
As fans continue to revisit “The Sopranos” and reflect on its portrayal of complex characters and themes, the question of how these characters would navigate contemporary political issues adds a new layer of intrigue. Imperioli’s insights provide a thought-provoking angle on how the show’s characters might respond to the current political landscape, offering a fresh perspective on a beloved television classic.
