The Importance of Dissent in Truth-Finding

In the pursuit of truth, dissent plays a crucial role in challenging established beliefs and uncovering hidden assumptions. As an advocate for dissent, I have explored this concept extensively in my writings and academic work. Dissent not only forces parties to strengthen their arguments but also reveals the knowledge and assumptions underlying their positions.

Nelson and Winter’s book, An Evolutionary Theory of Change, highlights how assumptions drive decision-making processes. Whether forecasting commodity prices or modeling complex phenomena, experts rely on a set of assumptions that may not always be explicit. Through dissent, these assumptions are brought to light, exposing potential biases and gaps in understanding.

In a democratic society, dissent is fundamental to fostering dialogue and debate among citizens. Similarly, experts have a responsibility to engage in dissent and conversation with nonexperts, challenging preconceived notions and guiding decision-making processes. This ethical duty requires experts to provide honest feedback, even if it contradicts the desires of nonexperts.

Building on the principles of the Hippocratic Oath, I propose a broader oath for experts: to help or at least do no harm. This commitment may involve delivering difficult truths that prompt nonexperts to reconsider their goals and actions, ultimately leading to better outcomes.
