This car ranks as America’s most-stolen vehicle
Car theft is a prevalent issue that continues to plague vehicle owners across the United States. A recent report from the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) has shed light on the most commonly stolen vehicles, with one particular make and model standing out above the rest.
The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has emerged as the most targeted car by thieves, with a theft rate that is a staggering 39 times higher than the average for all vehicles with model years ranging from 2022 to 2024. Priced at around $75,400, this high-performance version of the Chevrolet Camaro is a favorite among car enthusiasts due to its powerful horsepower and sleek design.
According to the HLDI report, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1’s vulnerability lies in its on-board ports that contain valuable vehicle data, making it an attractive target for thieves looking for an easy entry point. Matt Moore, chief insurance operations officer at HLDI, emphasized that the Camaro ZL1’s desirability, coupled with its vulnerability, makes it relatively easy for thieves to steal.
In response to the rising theft rates, General Motors, the parent company of Chevrolet, has released a software update for 2020 to 2024 Camaro models aimed at enhancing security measures. This move reflects GM’s commitment to counter evolving vehicle theft methods and protect its customers from falling victim to car theft.
The HLDI report also highlighted other vehicles that are frequently stolen, with pickup trucks and high-priced models dominating the list of the top 20 most stolen vehicles. The Acura TLX 4WD and the Chevrolet Camaro were identified as the second and third most commonly stolen models, respectively.
On the other end of the spectrum, the report identified the 20 least frequently stolen vehicles, with electric and plug-in hybrid models making up a significant portion of the list. These vehicles are less vulnerable to theft due to their connected features and the fact that they are often kept in garages, reducing the opportunity for thieves to target them.
Ultimately, car theft remains a significant concern for vehicle owners, and it is essential to take preventive measures to safeguard against potential theft. By staying informed about the latest security updates and implementing additional safety measures, car owners can minimize the risk of falling victim to auto theft and protect their valuable assets.
