‘This is a relationship that will be critical’

As Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani prepares to take office on New Year’s Day, he has confirmed that he will be reaching out to President Trump before officially assuming his role as the mayor of New York City. In an interview with NBC New York, Mamdani emphasized the importance of establishing a working relationship between City Hall and the White House, stating that it will be crucial for the success of the city.

While Mamdani did not specify the exact timing of his communication with the Trump administration, he expressed his intention to be proactive in addressing Trump’s policies on immigration and crime. He highlighted the need to engage in dialogue with the president, especially in areas where there is a possibility of collaboration for the benefit of all New Yorkers.

During the mayoral election campaign, President Trump had made threats to withhold federal funding from NYC and even suggested a federal takeover if Mamdani, whom he referred to as a “communist,” was elected. However, following Mamdani’s victory, Trump slightly softened his stance, expressing a desire for the new mayor’s success and indicating a willingness to offer some assistance.

In response to Trump’s occasional threats and public attacks, Mamdani disclosed that he has consulted with Governor Kathy Hochul on how to navigate these challenges effectively. By engaging in discussions with state officials and seeking advice on handling potential conflicts with the Trump administration, Mamdani aims to ensure that he can effectively represent the interests of all New Yorkers.
