Thousands protest far-right surge in Croatia following incidents
ZAGREB, Croatia — Over the weekend, thousands of individuals took to the streets in Croatia to protest against the rising far-right movement in the country. The demonstrations, titled “United against fascism,” occurred in multiple cities, with participants expressing their opposition to right-wing groups spreading fear and attempting to silence dissent.
The protesters called on authorities to crack down on far-right organizations and their use of pro-fascist symbols linked to Croatia’s World War II history. They emphasized the importance of not glorifying dark chapters from the past and treating national minorities with respect.
Journalist Maja Sever addressed the crowd in Zagreb, highlighting the dangers posed by extremist elements in society and commending the attendees for standing up for democracy.
However, counter-protesters in Rijeka and Zadar disrupted the peaceful demonstrations by engaging in provocative behavior, including hurling insults and projectiles at the participants.
Recent incidents targeting ethnic minorities and liberal groups have raised concerns about the resurgence of right-wing extremism in Croatia. The government’s alliance with a far-right party has further exacerbated tensions, leading to a polarized political landscape.
The use of controversial symbols and slogans by certain public figures has also contributed to the division within Croatian society. Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic has faced criticism for his handling of the situation, with accusations of ignoring the rise of far-right ideologies.
Croatia’s complex history, marked by the aftermath of the Yugoslav Wars, continues to influence its political landscape. As the country grapples with its past and present challenges, the need for unity and tolerance remains paramount.
In 2013, Croatia joined the EU, signaling a new chapter in its journey towards democracy and European integration.
