Three Democrats win double-digit support in early 2028 presidential primary poll
Former Vice President Kamala Harris is leading the pack in the 2028 Democratic presidential primary race, according to a recent poll conducted by Echelon Insights. Harris, who faced a defeat in the 2024 election against President Trump, has secured 26% support from Democrats and Democrat-leaning voters.
Following closely behind Harris are former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and California Governor Gavin Newsom, each with 11% and 10% of the support, respectively. Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York round out the top five with 7% and 6% backing, respectively.
Interestingly, when Harris is excluded from the poll due to her potential run for governor in California, the support for Newsom and Buttigieg increases to 12%. Ocasio-Cortez takes the lead with 9% support, followed by Booker at 8%, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz at 7%.
On the Republican side, Vice President JD Vance is leading the pack with a significant 33-point lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, with 42% and 9% support respectively. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are also in the running, but well behind Vance.
It is worth noting that 13% of voters remain undecided on their choice for the Democratic primary, while 16% are unsure on the Republican side. With the primaries still over two years away, there is ample time for candidates to make their case to the voters.
Newsom’s recent trip to South Carolina, the state holding the first Democratic primary in 2028, and Buttigieg’s experience as the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, could potentially impact their standing in the race. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the candidates position themselves and gain traction among voters.
