TikTok to launch local feed that taps users’ geolocation data

TikTok has announced the rollout of a new feature called the local feed, which will showcase videos from nearby businesses and services based on users’ precise geolocation data. This new tab, labeled “Local,” will provide content related to nearby travel, events, restaurants, shopping, and posts from local creators. However, the local tab will not be visible to users under 18, those with private accounts, or those who have set their privacy settings to “friends” or “only you.”

The introduction of this service comes after TikTok faced criticism in January for updating its privacy policy to include the collection of “precise location information” from users’ devices if they enable location services in their device settings. While some users expressed concerns about this data collection being invasive, TikTok clarified that users have the option to disable geolocation tracking in their settings.

TikTok emphasized that sharing geolocation data is voluntary and highlighted that many modern apps use similar information about their users to provide relevant, local experiences. The platform stated that geolocation tracking is turned off by default and will only be active when the app is in use.

In January, TikTok also underwent a change in ownership, separating from its previous owner, China-based ByteDance. The new ownership structure includes software maker Oracle, private equity firm Silver Lake, and Abu Dhabi-based investment firm MGX, among others, who collectively own 45% of the company. ByteDance retains a 19.9% stake in TikTok, just below the 20% ownership cap mandated by federal law.

As TikTok continues to evolve its features and privacy policies, it remains committed to providing a platform for creativity and expression while respecting users’ privacy preferences. The integration of the local feed is aimed at enhancing the user experience by offering more localized content and relevant recommendations.
