Tim Walz drops out of Minnesota governor’s race, Klobuchar considers jumping in
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz made a surprising announcement on Monday, revealing that he will not seek a third term in office. This decision has thrown the Minnesota governor’s race into disarray and has left many wondering who will step up to take his place. Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, is reportedly considering entering the race to replace Walz.
Walz’s decision not to run for reelection comes amid a challenging political landscape. The two-term governor, who was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2024, was facing potential backlash from a federal probe into a welfare fraud scandal in the state. While Walz himself is not implicated in the scandal, Republicans were quick to try to tie him to the issue in an effort to discredit his candidacy.
In a statement, Walz acknowledged the impact of the scandal on his decision, stating, “Every minute I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I can’t spend defending the people of Minnesota against the criminals who prey on our generosity and the cynics who prey on our differences.”
Despite his national profile and previous aspirations for a presidential run in 2028, some within the Democratic Party have expressed concerns about Walz’s electability. One anonymous senior Democratic lawmaker in Minnesota stated, “Many Democrats don’t want him to run, including me. He is certainly not corrupt, but he has not handled the fraud problem well and we worry about his electability.”
Senator Klobuchar, who met with Walz on Sunday to discuss the campaign, is now reportedly considering entering the race. With her strong track record in past statewide campaigns, Klobuchar could be a formidable candidate for the Democrats in Minnesota.
On the Republican side, the governor’s race features a crowded primary field, including candidates like MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, state Rep. Kristin Robbins, and Minneapolis attorney Chris Madel. The Republican Governors’ Association wasted no time in criticizing Walz’s leadership, stating, “After presiding over one of the biggest fraud scandals in history it’s no wonder that Tim Walz is being forced to drop his re-election bid.”
As the political landscape in Minnesota continues to evolve, all eyes will be on Senator Klobuchar to see if she decides to enter the governor’s race and how the election will unfold in the coming months.
