Tommy Gainey goes from qualifier to his first PGA Tour Champions title

Tommy Gainey secured his first PGA Tour Champions title with a stellar performance at the Constellation Furyk & Friends tournament held at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Florida. Gainey’s victory was highlighted by a remarkable eagle putt on the 13th hole, propelling him to a two-shot win with a final round score of 6-under 66.

Despite having to qualify for the tournament, Gainey proved his worth by starting the final round four shots behind leader Matt Gogel before making a surge in the back nine to clinch the title. Australian golfer Cameron Percy put up a strong fight, but ultimately fell short as Gainey maintained his composure and finished at 14-under 202.

Reflecting on his journey to this victory, Gainey expressed his gratitude for the hard work and perseverance that led to this moment. “I grinded for a long time, and finally I can say that grinding and hard work has paid off,” Gainey said. “Man, a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.”

Gogel, who had held the lead going into the final round, struggled with a 75 and tied for third place alongside golfing legends Vijay Singh and Thomas Bjorn. The tournament marked the end of an era at Timuquana Country Club, as it will be moving to Ocean Hammock next year.

Gainey’s win not only earned him his first PGA Tour Champions title but also secured him exemption and a significant jump in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. With this victory, Gainey has solidified his place among the elite players on the tour and is poised for continued success in the future.
