On the popular chat platform YesChat, users have access to a variety of bots that simulate conversations with famous personalities. From discussing cynicism with a Larry David bot to exploring Jewish wisdom with another Larry David bot, the options are endless. However, recent legal action taken by Tony Robbins against YesChat sheds light on the questionable practices of the platform.
Tony Robbins, the renowned motivational speaker, recently filed a lawsuit against the creators of YesChat. Robbins alleges that the platform has used his name and reputation without authorization to create bots such as Talk to Tony Robbins, Tony Robbins GPT, and Tony Robbins Español GPT. These bots allegedly contain copyrighted content from Robbins’ seminars, which he has trademarked.
According to the lawsuit, YesChat offers paid subscription tiers that grant users access to a large number of GPTs, including the unauthorized Tony Robbins bots. This unauthorized use of Robbins’ persona is seen as a direct competition to his own authorized AI clone, which is available on his official website for a fee.
The legal action, filed in federal court in San Diego, includes claims of federal trademark infringement, false advertising, and violation of California’s right of publicity law. The lawsuit seeks substantial compensatory damages for unfair competition and trademark violations, as well as punitive damages for what is described as “willful and malicious misconduct.”
YesChat has not responded to the cease and desist letter sent by Robbins’ attorney, Brian Wolf. The companies behind YesChat, InnoLeap and Mira Muse, have also remained silent on the matter. This legal battle marks a unique case in the realm of AI chatbots and celebrity personas.
While there have been previous lawsuits regarding the unauthorized use of copyrighted material for AI training, Wolf emphasizes that this case is distinct due to the replication of a well-known individual’s persona. The legal team representing Robbins is determined to protect the rights of celebrities and public figures in the digital age.
