Top Suffolk cop apologizes to family of popular CVS worker — as hundreds mourn Christmas Day murder at packed candlelight vigil

Suffolk’s Police Commissioner, Kevin Catalina, was among the hundreds of mourners who gathered at a vigil to honor the life of Edeedson Cine, a beloved CVS worker who tragically lost his life on Christmas Day. Catalina, visibly emotional, offered a heartfelt apology to Cine’s family for failing to prevent the senseless killing.

During the candlelight vigil at Lindenhurst Village Square, Catalina expressed his deep regret, stating, “It’s my job to make sure that things like this don’t happen.” He extended his apologies to the grieving family and shared a poignant moment of consolation with Cine’s father.

Catalina, determined to seek justice, pledged to collaborate with Suffolk DA Ray Tierney to ensure that the accused perpetrator, John Pilaccio, faces a lifetime behind bars for his heinous crime. Pilaccio allegedly entered the CVS, demanded money from Cine, and fatally stabbed him in the chest. Cine had been working on Christmas Day to allow a colleague to spend time with their family.

Despite the tragic loss, Cine’s father, guided by his faith, expressed forgiveness towards Pilaccio, emphasizing that love triumphs over hate. He spoke of his pride in the man his son was and the potential he had yet to fulfill.

The vigil brought together over 200 individuals who lit candles and shared memories of Cine, highlighting his selfless nature. Friends, family, and even acquaintances reflected on his kindness and generosity. One woman, identified as Cine’s best friend, tearfully recalled the bond they shared through a collection of cherished photos.

A young boy, Daniel, recounted a heartwarming encounter with Cine at the CVS, where the compassionate worker covered the cost of a Gatorade when Daniel fell short on money. This small act of kindness left a lasting impact on the boy, who described Cine as a “good guy” and wished for more individuals like him in the world.

The community gathered at the vigil to honor Edeedson Cine’s memory, celebrating his life and the positive influence he had on those around him. As they mourned his untimely passing, they also celebrated the legacy of kindness and compassion he leaves behind.
