Transform your landscape: Explore artificial turf’s benefits

Colorado Homeowners Turn to Artificial Turf to Comply with Water Conservation Regulations

As Colorado cities implement stricter limits on the types and amounts of grass that homeowners can plant, especially on new or redeveloped properties, many residents are opting for artificial turf to meet regulations and save water.

Cities like Aurora and Broomfield have imposed regulations on high-water grasses and ornamental water features, while others like Denver and Colorado Springs have restricted lawn watering hours or days to conserve water.

While artificial turf significantly reduces water usage, questions arise regarding installation and maintenance costs, long-term benefits, and environmental impact.

The installation cost of artificial turf varies from $6 to $20 per square foot, depending on quality, site preparation, and labor. A typical 500-square-foot project can range from $3,000 to $10,000.

Despite the misconception that artificial turf is maintenance-free, it requires regular care, especially for pet waste removal. Lauren Floyd from C&H Landscaping emphasized the necessity of watering artificial turf to clean pet waste.

Ross Hulstein, CEO of Highlands Landscaping, highlighted the importance of proper drainage and sprinkler systems for maintaining artificial turf, particularly for pet owners.

Newer artificial turf products are more durable compared to older versions, with some homeowners reporting no need for replacement or repair even after several years of use.

Aside from water conservation benefits and reduced maintenance tasks like weeding and mowing, concerns regarding health and environmental impacts of artificial turf exist. Dan Zehr from Living Landscapes cautioned against potential risks associated with microplastics and toxic infill products.

He recommended using plants as ground cover to support birds and pollinators, emphasizing the environmental benefits of natural grass over artificial turf.

Kristin Crawford from Waterwise Landscapes noted the preference for low-water plant options among homeowners and mentioned the rarity of artificial turf installations by their company.
