Trapped hot air balloon passengers saved in heart-stopping rescue at nearly 1,000 feet above ground
Two individuals were rescued in a dramatic operation after their hot air balloon crashed into a cell tower in Texas, leaving them suspended nearly 1,000 feet above the ground.
The Longview Fire Department sprang into action with a “high angle rescue” early on Saturday morning upon receiving reports of a rainbow hot air balloon becoming entangled on a cell tower.
The balloon’s envelope was pierced by the sharp edges of the 1,100-foot tower, causing it to dangle approximately 920 feet above the ground, as detailed by the fire department.
Photos shared by the department depicted the damaged balloon caught in the tower’s structure, with its basket containing the two passengers swinging precariously in the wind.
A team of fourteen rescuers, comprising on-duty and off-duty responders, scaled the tower and reached the distressed victims by 10 a.m. Both individuals were conscious and did not report any injuries sustained during the collision.
Using multiple 300-foot ropes, the first responders safely extracted the passengers from the hot air balloon basket. The pair was lowered down “rope by rope” until they reached solid ground, as confirmed by fire officials during a press conference.
Lieutenant Stephen Winchell, a member of Longview Special Operations, commended the team for their seamless execution of the rescue mission despite the physical demands of climbing up and down the towering structure with heavy gear and ropes.
The basket was described as swaying significantly in the wind while the terrified passengers clung to its edges, emphasizing the challenges faced by the rescuers during the operation.
The event was deemed as the “Super Bowl of rope rescues” due to the logistical complexities presented by the exposure to outdoor elements and the towering height of the structure. The passengers were lauded for their composure and cooperation throughout the perilous rescue.
The incident attracted a large audience, with spectators even setting up chairs to witness the hours-long operation. Tower King II, a local construction company, was tasked with dismantling the remnants of the balloon and ensuring the safe retrieval of all components.
The firefighters and emergency responders involved in the rescue efforts were recognized for their bravery and dedication, receiving a gesture of appreciation in the form of free pizza.
