Tretter scores 23 as Miami (OH) women survive Toledo 68-58 to clinch NCAA Tournament berth
Miami of Ohio women’s basketball made history on Saturday by winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament title and securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008. The top-seeded Redhawks defeated No. 6 seed Toledo 68-58 in Cleveland, with standout performance from senior guard Amber Tretter, who scored 23 points.
This victory marks the second MAC Championship title in program history for Miami of Ohio and the first under the guidance of third-year head coach Glenn Box. Tretter, who recorded her 31st career double-double and 10th of the season, led the team to victory alongside Ilse de Vries with 17 points, Amber Scalia with 14 points, and Tamar Singer with 13 points.
Miami started strong, holding Toledo scoreless for over seven minutes in the first quarter to build a commanding 16-0 lead. The RedHawks maintained their lead throughout the game, entering halftime with a 28-16 advantage as the Rockets struggled to score.
Toledo fought back in the third quarter, outscoring Miami 24-19 to narrow the deficit to seven points heading into the final quarter. Patricia Anumgba led the Rockets’ rally with 22 points and eight rebounds, bringing Toledo within six points at 56-50 with just under four minutes remaining.
However, Miami responded decisively, as Tamar Singer converted a crucial three-point play to extend the lead. The RedHawks closed out the game confidently at the free-throw line to secure their victory over Toledo for the second time this season.
With a final record of 28-6, Miami earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, set to begin on March 20. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the program and showcases the team’s determination and talent throughout the season.
