Trial for Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco begins in Dominican Republic

The trial of Wander Franco, the Tampa Bay Rays shortstop, has commenced in the Dominican Republic. The case involves allegations of sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl. Franco expressed his desire for justice to prevail during the trial.

Charged in Puerto Plata with sexually abusing a minor, sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking, Franco faces a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison. Prosecutors presented documents as evidence in the initial hearing and plan to summon at least seven witnesses over the course of the trial, which is scheduled to proceed on Thursday, Friday, and the following Monday.

Despite hearing the charges against him, Franco maintained his stance on the importance of justice. His legal team, including Irina Ventura and Teodosio Jaquez, argued that some evidence against Franco is fraudulent and illegal. They highlighted that the underage girl involved denied engaging in any sexual activity with Franco.

On the other hand, Prosecutor Claudio Cordero asserted that all evidence was lawfully obtained and sufficient to secure a conviction. The trial, which was initially set for December but postponed until June, could span up to eight months based on the typical duration of trials in the Dominican Republic.

Franco, who was enjoying a stellar season in 2023 before the investigation began, faced allegations of being in a relationship with a minor and allegedly paying her mother a substantial sum for her approval. The trial’s progression will be closely monitored, given the high-profile nature of the case.
