Trilateral US-Ukraine-Russia peace talks resume in UAE after major energy attack
The latest round of trilateral talks between American, Ukrainian, and Russian representatives took place in the United Arab Emirates this week, with discussions focusing on ending Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Key areas of disagreement include the fate of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, and post-war Western security guarantees for Ukraine.
Despite some progress in the first round of talks, significant differences remain between the parties. Russia is demanding a full Ukrainian military withdrawal from Donbas, a proposal rejected by Kyiv. The control of the nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, occupied by Russian forces, is also a contentious issue. Additionally, the nature of post-war security guarantees, including the involvement of American forces, is a crucial demand from Ukraine.
While Russia has expressed reluctance to accept the deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine post-war, there have been indications that some form of security guarantees may be acceptable. Ukrainian officials, including Rustem Umerov, have emphasized the importance of American involvement in these guarantees.
The negotiations are ongoing, with separate groups focusing on specific areas before a joint synchronization of positions. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia is continuing its military operation but remains open to a peaceful settlement.
Meanwhile, Ukraine faced a major Russian drone and missile bombardment that caused significant damage to the country’s energy grid. This winter has seen sustained Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, leading to regular blackouts for millions of Ukrainians.
Following a week-long commitment to halt attacks on Ukrainian energy targets, both Russia and Ukraine continued long-range attacks overnight. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 105 drones, of which 88 were shot down or suppressed. Russia claimed to have shot down 24 Ukrainian drones.
The situation remains tense as both sides engage in military actions while diplomatic negotiations continue. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed frustration over Russia’s actions, questioning the credibility of their promises and the prospects for successful talks. The international community closely watches the developments in the region as efforts to resolve the conflict continue.
